About Simon

Simon Hatchers writes about the questions most of us don’t say out loud until 3 a.m.: Is it me? Is it us? Is it too late?

His work grew out of his own midlife reckoning, a season when the questions in this book stopped being abstract, and from a stubborn conviction that people facing the biggest decisions of their lives deserve better tools than guilt, platitudes, or endless mental loops.

The Midlife Maelstrom, his first book, replaces the impossible question, should I stay or should I go?, with four answerable ones, then walks readers through whatever comes next: rebuilding a marriage, leaving it with integrity, or building a life that feels like their own again.

Simon writes the way a good friend talks: warm, direct, and unwilling to pretend hard things are easy. He believes clarity is a kindness, that staying and leaving can both be acts of courage, and that midlife is a turning point, not a verdict.

When he isn’t writing, he can usually be found walking a stretch of shoreline, thinking about the tide.

The Book

The Midlife Maelstrom

New tools to process your struggling relationship

It’s 3 a.m. and you’re awake again, running the same loop: Should I stay or should I go?

If logic alone could answer that question, you’d have answered it by now. The Midlife Maelstrom offers a different way through. Instead of one impossible question, it gives you four you can actually answer:

  • Is the problem mostly mine: my own patterns or expectations?
  • Is it my partner’s behavior, or unwillingness to change?
  • Is it the accumulated weight of our history?
  • Or are we simply heading toward different futures?

With honest self-assessments and reflection prompts, you’ll learn to separate a midlife crisis from a marriage crisis, see your relationship clearly through the emotional fog, and make a decision you can live with. Then the book stays with you, whether you’re rebuilding your marriage, separating with integrity, or creating a fulfilling life after divorce.

Warm but unflinching, this is a guide for the hardest crossroads of midlife.
